The procedure for completely uninstalling SAS® software releases 8.2, 9.1.3, 9.2, 9.3, and 9.4 from a Windows operating environment


The following instructions document how to completely uninstall SAS® 8.2, SAS® 9.1.3, SAS® 9.2, SAS® 9.3 and SAS® 9.4 under Windows (for a single-machine installation). If you do not intend to completely remove SAS from your system, then DO NOT perform the following steps.

Before you begin this process, back up your entire system. See the Microsoft website for instructions or contact the IT group in your organization.

 
  1. Stop all services that are related to SAS releases 8.2, 9.1.3, 9.2, 9.3 and 9.4 by completing the following steps: 
    1. Click Start ► Settings ► Control Panel ► Administrative Tools ► Services or click Start ► Run and type services.msc.
    2. Scroll to each relevant SAS service, click the service, and click Stop. The following are examples of some of the SAS services you might see (it is not a complete list):

      Services relevant to SAS 8.2:

      SAS Job Spawner

      Services relevant to SAS 9.1.3 (where BIArchitec stands for the project name):

      SAS Lev1 CS - BIArchitec   (Connect Server)
      SAS Lev1 MS - BIArchitec   (Metadata Server)
      SAS Lev1 OB - BIArchitec   (Object Spawner)
      SAS Object Spawner Daemon   (Integration Technologies)

      Note: For SAS 9.4, see "Stopping SAS Servers that are Running" in the SAS 9.4 Intelligence Platform: Installation and Configuration Guide.

    3. Verify that there are no SAS processes running under the Task Manager, such as sas.exe, spawner.exe, objspawn.exe, sasmc.exe, and so on.

 

2. Uninstall the relevant SAS products.

    1. For SAS 8.2 and SAS 9.1.3, click Start ► Settings ► Control Panel ► Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the relevant SAS products. 

      IMPORTANT: Uninstall the following three products last:

      • The SAS Private JRE (J2SE) Java Runtime Environment 1.4.1

        Warning: DO NOT uninstall the SAS Private JRE before you uninstall all of your SAS components. The SAS Private JRE is THE component that is used by the install/uninstall wizards. If you uninstall this component before you uninstall the other SAS components, you WILL have problems uninstalling or you WILL NOT be able to uninstall at all.

      • The SAS Private JRE (J2SE) Java Runtime Environment 1.4.2_09 

        Warning: DO NOT uninstall the SAS Private JRE before you uninstall all of your SAS components. The SAS Private JRE is THE component that is used by the install/uninstall wizards. If you uninstall this component before you uninstall the other SAS components, you WILL have problems uninstalling or you WILL NOT be able to uninstall at all.

      • The SAS Versioned Jar Repository (VJR) 9.2

        Warning: Do NOT uninstall the SAS Versioned Jar Repository until you first uninstall all of SAS. The SAS Visual Jar Repository must be in place where you have SAS installed.

        If you have problems removing the SAS Versioned Jar Repository, reference SAS Note 31151, "An error message appears when you try to remove the SAS® Versioned Jar Repository by using the Add or Remove Programs tool in Microsoft Windows."

    2. For SAS 9.3, reference one of the following:
    3. For SAS 9.4, refer to "Uninstalling Your SAS Software" in the SAS® 9.4 Intelligence Platform: Installation and Configuration Guide.

                   Note: For SAS 9.4, see "Additional Resources" if unable to launch or uninstall products using SAS® Deployment Manager 9.4.

  1. Reboot your PC.
  2. Ensure that the services that are related to SAS were removed by refreshing the Services window (select Action from the menu and select Refresh).
  3. Delete the SAS configuration directory (for example, C:\SAS\config).
  4. Open Windows Explorer and delete the following directories:
    C:\Program Files\SAS Institute
    C:\Program Files\SAS
    C:\Program Files\SASHome
    C:\Program Files\SASHome2
    C:\ProgramData\SAS
    • Directory for SAS 8.2:
      C:\Documents and Settings\userID-that-performed-the-installation\Local Settings\Temp\{68624FB8-2512-46B5-9664-64366DCCB3EB
    • Directory for SAS 9.1.3:
      C:\Documents and Settings\userID-that-performed-the-installation\Local Settings\Temp\{68624FB8-2512-46B5-9664-64366DCCB3EB}
      C:\Documents and Settings\userID-that-performed-the-installation\ssnprefs.xml
      C:\Documents and Settings\userID-that-performed-the-installation\SSN.log
      C:\Documents and Settings\userID-that-performed-the-installation\SSN.log.lck
      C:\WinNT\vpd.properties
    • Directory for SAS 9.2 (TS1M0) Phase I:
      C:\Documents and Settings\userID-that-performed-the-installation\Local Settings\Application Data\SAS

      In a Windows Vista environment, delete:

      C:\Users\userID-that-performed-the-installation\AppData\Local\SAS\SAS Deployment Wizard
    • Directory for SAS 9.2 (TS2M0-TS2M3) Phase II:
      C:\Documents and Settings\userID-that-performed-the-installation;\Local Settings\Application Data\SAS

      In a Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008 environment, delete the following directories:

      C:\Users\userID-that-performed-the-installation\AppData\Local\SAS\SASDeploymentWizard 
      Note: There are no spaces in the directory name for SAS 9.2 (TS2Mx.).

      • C:\Users\userID-that-performed-the-installation\AppData\Local\SAS
      • C:\Users\userID-that-performed-the-installation\AppData\Roaming\SAS
    • Directory for SAS 9.3:
      C:\Documents and Settings\userID-that-performed-the-installation;\Local Settings\Application Data\SAS

      In a Microsoft Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2012 environment, delete the following directories:

      • C:\Users\userID-that-performed-the-installation\AppData\Local\SAS\SASDeploymentWizard 
        Note: There are no spaces in the directory name for SAS 9.3.
      • C:\Users\userID-that-performed-the-installation\AppData\Local\SAS
      • C:\Users\userID-that-performed-the-installation\AppData\Roaming\SAS

        Open Windows Explorer and delete the following files:

      • C:\Documents and Settings\userID-that-performed-the-installation\ssnprefs.xml
      • C:\Documents and Settings\userID-that-performed-the-installation\SSN.log
      • C:\Documents and Settings\userID-that-performed-the-installation\SSN.log.lck
      • C:\WinNT\vpd.properties
    • Directory for SAS 9.4:
      C:\Documents and Settings\userID-that-performed-the-installation;\Local Settings\Application Data\SAS

      In a Microsoft Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Windows 2008 or Windows 2012 environment, or Windows Server 2016, delete the following directories:

      • C:\Users\userID-that-performed-the-installation\AppData\Local\SAS\SASDeploymentWizard 
        Note: There are no spaces in the directory name for SAS 9.4.
      • C:\Users\userID-that-performed-the-installation\AppData\Local\SAS
      • C:\Users\userID-that-performed-the-installation\AppData\Roaming\SAS
  5. Click Start ► Run, type regedit, and click OK.

    Note: For Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Windows Server 2008 operating systems, or Windows Server 2016, click Start, type regedit in the search box, and press Enter.

    • Delete the following registry entries if they exist using the Registry Editor:
      1. To open the Registry Editor dialog box: Click Start and type regedit on the Run line or in the Search Program and Files search box.
      2. Highlight the following registry key(s), right-click and select Delete, and then select Yes to confirm.
        • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SAS Institute Inc.
        • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\SAS Institute Inc.

    Warning: SAS is not responsible when you edit the Windows registry. Changes in the Windows registry can render your system unusable and require that you reinstall the operating system. Always back up your registry before you make any registry changes. For assistance, see Windows Help, Microsoft documentation, or the Microsoft Windows website.

  6. Reboot your system.
  7. Check and make sure that no SAS services are still listed. 
    1. Click Start ► Settings ► Control Panel ► Administrative Tools ► Services or click Start ► Run and type services.msc.
    2. Look for any SAS services that are still listed
    3. If there are still SAS services listed, click Start ? Run, type regedit, and click OK

      Note: For Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and Windows 2012 operating systems, click Start, type regedit in the search box, and press Enter.

    4. Go to the following registry location: 
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services
    5. Look for any SAS services, highlight the SAS service, right-click and select Delete, and then select Yes to confirm. 

      Warning: SAS is not responsible when you edit the Windows registry. Changes in the Windows registry can render your system unusable and require that you reinstall the operating system.
