SAS Enterprise Guide requires a local or remote configured installation of SAS to process SAS code. When connecting to a remote configured SAS server, two connections are made in order to submit projects and SAS code. The first connection is to the SAS® Metadata Server and the second is to the SAS compute server. The SAS compute server will prompt for credentials in the following situations.
- The SAS metadata connection profile that is defined contains an incorrect entry in the Authentication domain field. The Authentication domain field is not intended to list a network's Microsoft Active Directory domain name: that is a common mistake. The Authentication domain field within the connection profile is provided to specify an authentication domain that is defined in metadata, which should be used to start the SAS compute server using the credentials associated with the authentication domain. If you do not intend on specifying a different login to be used to start a SAS compute server, leave this field blank. By default the credentials that are used to connect to the metadata server are used to start the compute server.
- Use Integrated Windows Authentication was selected in the active SAS Enterprise Guide connection profile and the SAS compute server (SASApp by default) is not configured for Integrated Windows Authentication. Select Use Integrated Windows Authentication only when the SAS administrator has instructed you to connect using this option.
- For Windows servers, log on as batch rights have not been granted correctly on the SAS compute server. See SAS Note 57382, "Users are prompted for credentials when they attempt to connect to application servers by using SAS® Enterprise Guide®" for more details and how to verify if that is the cause.
- For UNIX servers, authentication issues might be the cause. See SAS KB0036227, "Using PROC PERMTEST to diagnose UNIX host authentication issues in SAS® 9.2 and later and in SAS® Viya®" to determine if that is the cause.
- The SAS compute server is set to Prompt. The Prompt setting is similar to Host with the Username/Password setting, but it forces SAS Enterprise Guide and SAS Add-In for Microsoft Office to prompt users.
If users are still encountering prompting when connecting to a SAS compute server after reviewing the above possibilities, see Unable to Connect to a Remote SAS Server Installation and Metadata and Workspace Connection Testing from the Client. Then contact SAS Technical Support and provide the generated information.
